Artist Talk
JANNIS MARWITZ
DAVID JABLONOWSKI

A Tale of A Tub invites you for a conversation between artist Jannis Marwitz and guest curator David Jablonowski about the exhibition Guten Morgen, Europa! Through painting and sculpture, Guten Morgen, Europa! questions the appropriation and domestication of world conflicts and a global identity. The many-layered nature of the significance of world history, art history and social history can be seen in the work of the artists. Taking its starting point from the show, the discussion will cover topics relating to Marwitz’s practice and its relation to the other works on view at A Tale of A Tub.

JANNIS MARWITZ is based in Brussels. Appropriating both the symbolism and material technique used in antique European painting, Marwitz’s work is a bizarre rendering of myth and allegory. Marwitz incorporates domestic imagery in his work, grounding allegory in the familial and revisiting classical iconography in order to subvert the traditional ideas surrounding them. Through depicting imagery that has remained integral to European art for centuries, the paintings move to question traditional power discourses and parables underlying our understanding of our collective history.

DAVID JABLONOWSKI is based in Amsterdam. In his work, Jablonowski explores the evolution of communication technologies through the medium of sculptures, videos and installations. For the show at A Tale of A Tub, Jablonowski explores the myth of the European Union and recent developments threatening its stability.
